Abstract

Movie was one of the media in language to communicate or deliver a message created by a director or movie creator for audiences. A lot of people liked to watch the movie than novel. This research study was about social conflicts and movie as a topic selection. In this research, the researcher used theory from Lewis Coser and other sources were put to understanding of meanings context from the movie. The objective of this research to find out the kinds of social conflict in The Great Gatsby Movie, to know how social conflicts occurred in the movie, and the last aimed to know what the messages was conveyed in the movie. The research method was a descriptive qualitative method. The researcher used documentation analysis to collect the data. The researcher focuses on analyzing the social conflicts of The Great Gatsby movie. After analyzing the data, the researcher found three kinds of social conflicts such as 8 social conflict of positions, 7 social conflicts of interest and 9 social conflict of role. Then, the researcher found 24 causes of social conflicts in the movie. The last, the researcher also found 7 messages in the movie. They are: optimism is noble, love (also friends) can never be bought by money, uncontrolled desires are not always good, it is not easy to erase traces of the past, physical beauty is timeless and fleeting, the dangers of assuming, only true friends who sincerely love us. According to these results, the researcher suggested that the researcher hoped the readers comprehend the hidden meaning which was conveyed in the movie, the students are suggested to comprehend the literary works, especially in this case is the movie and the teacher and educator should give the student experiences and material about social conflict especially of movie in learning literary work.
