Abstract
Authentic assessment has become increasingly popular as it is recommended in the 2013 curriculum. Besides traditional assessments, teachers are suggested to use authentic assessment not only in the end-product of learning but also in the process of learning. This applies also in the assessment of reading lesson of junior high school level. While for many years English teachers have been accustomed to traditional assessments to measure the reading competencies, now they have alternatives to measure the students’ learning outcomes for the same area. This article reports the research findings on the washback effect of a particular type of authentic assessment namely Retelling strategy, in reading class for the students. This descriptive study involved 32 students of junior high school SMPN 6 Semarang as the subjects of the research. To them, a questionnaire was distributed, and class observation was done by the authors. The results showed that authentic assessments gave positive washback to the students in four areas: enhancing students’ enthusiasm in reading, reducing boredom in class activity, increasing students’ curiosity in reading the text, and improving students’ higher order thinking skills.
