Abstract

Mathematics learning is not enough to provide information that’s only memorized but needs to develop students’ higher order thinking skills (HOTS). This study describes the ability of students’ higher order thinking skills in mathematics subjects in primary schools in Semarang. Based on these issues, this study aims to analyze students's critical, creative, and problem-solving skills. This research used a qualitative approach to describe the ability of critical thinking, creative, and problem solving qualitatively based on quantitative data. The sample in this research is the 5th graders of four pilot projects of elementary school curriculum 2013 in Semarang city which amounts to 106 students. The data collected by tests and interviews. While the technique of data analysis using qualitative descriptive formula. The results showed that students' critical thinking ability in Mathematics subject in primary schools in Semarang consisted of very critical category 42,2%; critical 44.3%; quite critical 10.3%; and less critical 3%. The result of creative thinking ability analysis showed very creative categories 8%; creative 12%; quite creative 8%; less creative 3%; very poor creative 69%; while the results of problem solving analysis consists of very high categories of 40%; high 41%; moderate 18%; and low 1%. In conclusion, the ability of students critical thinking is 86%. The result of the analysis of creative thinking ability is the majority of students are in very creative category that is 69%, while the result of problem solving ability shows that students have been able to solve the problem of Math by 81%. Based on these conclusions, recommendation for teachers, the school, and the department of education have to develop HOTS-oriented issues and applied to students’ elementary school.
